Preparation Guide of Paradise Honey Beehives

Assembling the Polystyrene Beehive with Wood Glue/Adhesive
To assemble a Paradise honey polystyrene beehive, first lay out all the components and ensure they fit together correctly. Apply a high-quality, waterproof wood glue or adhesive to the joints and edges of the polystyrene pieces. Press the parts together firmly, wiping away any excess glue, and allow them to dry completely according to the adhesive’s recommended curing time.

Securing the Hive for Stability
After gluing, ensure the beehive structure is stable and aligned correctly. If needed, use clamps or weights to hold the pieces in place while the glue dries. Double-check that all connections are secure and that the hive is square and level, as any misalignment could affect the hive's functionality and durability.

Painting with UV Water-Based Exterior Paint
Once the hive assembly is complete and the glue has fully dried, apply a UV-protective, water-based exterior paint to the inside and outside of the beehive. This paint will shield the polystyrene from sunlight and weather damage on the outside and stop bees potentially attempting to nibble the interior. Use smooth, even strokes using a short 100mm foam roller to cover the entire surface, applying at least two coats for optimal protection. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before adding the next, and ensure the hive is fully dry before placing it outdoors.

Your Paradise Bee Hive Questions Answered

Product

What are Paradise hives?

Paradise hives are a type of vertical hive that is designed to provide a more natural environment for bees to live in. They are made from sustainable materials and are designed to be easy to manage.

What materials are Paradise hives made from?

Paradise hives are made from high-quality Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), including additional parts that use a range of recycled plastic materials.

How are Paradise hives different from traditional hives?

Traditional hives are usually made of wood and have a rectangular shape, while Paradise hives are often made of eco-friendly materials and have a more rounded shape. They however use exactly the same frames used in a standard Langstroth beehive.

How many frames can a Paradise hive hold?

Depending upon which Paradise hive you choose, typically come in 6, 8, 9 and 10 frames.

Are Paradise hives more difficult to manage?

Some beekeepers may find Paradise hives more difficult to manage than traditional hives, especially if they are not familiar with working on vertical hive systems like the Langstroth/ Flow hive or National bee hives. However, with proper understanding of the various parts of the hive and education, Paradise hives can be just as easy to manage as any other type of hive.

Are Paradise Hives made from recycles materials?

As most of the parts of a Paradise hive are made from Polystyrene or PTFE, they are totally recyclable. Even if you paint your beehive, the paint can be burn off during the recycle process. This make Paradise hive one of the most sustainable you can buy.

Are Paradise hives suitable for beginners?

Yes, Paradise hives are a good option for beginners as they are easy to use and maintain. However, it's important to do your research and learn about beekeeping best practices before getting started.

Can Paradise hives be used in extreme hot and cold climates?

They have been tested in harsh environments facing ± 50°C in Northern Europe, arctic Russia, Australia and New Zealand.

I have a small yard or rooftop, can I still have a hive?

Paradise Hives are perfect for setting-up just about anywhere.

You will need enough space to access the back of the hive for easy harvesting and your bees will require a clear space at the front of the hive for their flight path.

You'll also need to check-in with local governing bodies to find out if there are any regulations that you need to be aware of.

Here are some of our top tips on where to set up your beehive.

Using Paradise Hives

How do you harvest honey from a Paradise hive?

There are now two methods in how honey can be harvested however depends upon your choice of which Paradise Honey hive you choose.

Standard Method of Extracting Honey:
If choosing one on the standard Paradise Hives, harvesting honey from a hive is similar to harvesting from other types of beehives.

You will need to remove the frames with the honeycomb, extract the honey from the comb using a honey extractor/spinner, and then bottle and store the honey.

Smart Hive:
The clever guys at Paradise Honey have now developed an easy to extract honey system that can not only be stacked on top of each other, thus providing multiple supers but a bee secure method of removing the honey out of the hive using a specific drainage system. This method does not need the frames to be removed or placed into an extractor.

Is there any safety information I need to be aware of?

Beekeeping is a fascinating hobby which when approached with knowledge, skill and dedication can be incredibly rewarding.

It is important to understand some basic safety guidelines to ensure that your beekeeping experience is a safe and positive one.

Beekeeping suits and other personal protective equipment can offer excellent prevention against bee stings but are not 100 percent effective. It’s important new beekeepers exercise caution when tending to their hives and are comfortable with the fact that sooner or later, all beekeepers get stung.

Check out this Flow sponsored safety pamphlet covering common beekeeping safety risks and first aid responses.

Bees

How do I get bees?

Bees rarely find their way into empty beehive boxes, even though they are designed to be a perfect home for them.

There are a number of ways of starting a colony, from buying a package of bees, to receiving a hive split or catching a swarm.

We also have a range of videos and blogs to help you understand the different ways in which you can source bees for your new hive.

How many bees can a Paradise hive support?

A Paradise hive can support up to 60,000 bees, which is comparable to a traditional Langstroth hive. However this number can be increased by simply adding more Brood and Super boxes on your hive. Consideration no matter of the hive design and type, needs to be given of an acceptable working height.

Are Paradise hives better for the bees?

Many beekeepers believe that Paradise hives provide a more natural environment for bees to live in, which can lead to healthier and more productive colonies. However, it ultimately depends on the individual needs of your bees and your personal preferences as a beekeeper.
