WHERE DO WE SEND OUR QUEEN BEES?

Currently, we can send queen bees to the following states within Australia:

    • Australian Capital Territory
    • New South Wales
    • South Australia
    • Victoria

Unfortunately, at this current time we cannot send Bee Queens to Queensland, Tasmania, Western Australia and Northern Territory due to bio-security restrictions and regulation rules.

    IMPORTANT
Please note that Buzzbee has no control over the speed of the Express Postage, which is controlled and managed by Australia Post. This postage system still remains the fastest method to post queen bees. We’re pleased that most customers still receive their queen bees within a couple of working days. VARIETIES OF HONEY BEE BREEDS/VARIETIES

In Australia, native bees for sale are not available as they are found only in nature however we do breed Italian or Carniolan honey bees. They’re known for being gentle and good to medium honey producers.

    Italian

Italian bees are strong foragers and do a great job at keeping their hive clean. When starting out, you can’t go too far wrong with Italian bees. Their gentle nature and productivity provide a great way for new beekeepers to become comfortable around bees. This breed is by far the most popular due to its combined good temperament whist being good foragers for honey production.

    Caucasian

Caucasian honey bees are an Old World strain known for their gentleness and productivity.  Apis mellifera caucasica is endowed with the longest tongue  of all known honey bee varieties.  This trait, coupled with a propensity to fly earlier, later, and in cooler conditions results in a bee that is renowned for exceptional honey production. Another interesting trait is their tendency to gather larger amounts of propolis than most bees.

    Carniolan

These bees are known as Carniolan bees, or "Carnies" for short, in English. Currently, this subspecies is the second most popular among beekeepers (after the Italian bee). It’s favoured for several reasons, not the least being its ability to defend itself successfully against insect pests while being extremely gentle in its behaviour toward beekeepers. These bees are particularly adept at adjusting worker population to nectar availability.

    Please Note

All of our queen bees are usually unmarked. All of the bees come straight from the bee yard and as a result all queen bees are usually not marked and can't be taken out of the pages to be marked. We find that most customers don’t want them marked so that they can choose the colour of their choosing or leave them natural.

Preparation Guide of Introducing a New Queen Bee

Preparing for the arrival of a new queen bee involves several important steps to ensure a smooth transition and acceptance by the existing hive. First, locate and remove the old queen from the hive, as her presence could lead to the rejection or harm of the new queen. After removing the old queen, wait for a day or two to allow the hive to recognise her absence, which increases the chances of them accepting the new queen.

When introducing the new queen, follow the guidelines provided in the Blog https://buzzbee.com.au/blogs/info/methods-of-introducing-a-queen-bee-to-a-beehive , such as placing her in a queen cage with a candy plug. Position the cage between the frames in the brood chamber, ensuring the bees have access to the cage but cannot directly reach the queen. The workers will gradually eat through the candy plug, releasing the new queen into the colony. During this time, it’s crucial to monitor the hive's behavior, checking for signs of aggression or acceptance. If the bees appear calm and begin feeding the queen through the cage, it's a positive sign that they are likely to accept her. After about three to five days, the queen should be released, and you can check to see if she has started laying eggs, indicating successful integration into the hive. This careful preparation and gradual introduction process help ensure the new queen is accepted and can begin her role in leading the colony.
