🧯 Safety Preparation Guide for the Use of Oxalic Acid in Beekeeping

Purpose:

To ensure safe handling, mixing, and application of oxalic acid when treating honey bee colonies for varroa mite control.

1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Always wear appropriate protective gear before handling oxalic acid:

  • Chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or neoprene)
  • Safety goggles or face shield
  • Respirator mask (rated for acid vapours)
  • Protective clothing (long sleeves, coveralls, and closed footwear)

⚠️ PPE is available from Buzzbee Beekeeping Supplies both in-store and online.

2. Preparation & Mixing

  • Prepare and mix oxalic acid in a well-ventilated outdoor area.
  • Avoid inhaling fumes or dust during preparation.

  • Only apply oxalic acid when temperatures are suitable and bees are mostly in the hive.
  • Follow the product label for correct dosage and method (vaporisation, trickle, or spray).
  • Keep bystanders and animals away during treatment.
  • Avoid direct contact with the acid or vapours.

4. After Use

  • Wash hands, tools, and PPE thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Dispose of residues and containers according to local environmental regulations.
  • Store oxalic acid powder and mixed solution in sealed containers, away from children and animals.

5. Emergency Procedures

  • Skin Contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water.
