Description
Description
The Bee-Friendly Varroa CO2 Injection Count Tester uses harmless carbon dioxide gas to accurately and easily count mites on your bees. No need to harm the bees, just gently shake them in the device and the mites will fall off and through the central grill for quick and convenient counting.
Usage instructions for CO2 varroa mite testing (see attached photo):
- Ensure that the CO2 Cartridge is correctly loaded into the injector.
- Turn the testing device up-right with the largest chamber is facing upwards.
- Remove the top lid to the largest chamber.
- Ensure that the central grill is in position correctly in the centre and seated on the inner supports.
- Place 200 bees into the main larger area of the canister (TIP: Filling bees up to the second red line will provide you approximately 200 bees.)
- Securely replace the lid back onto the canister
- Place the needle of the CO2 injector nozzle, through little hole on the side of the canister. Unlock the safety on the trigger and then press the trigger for approximately 4 to 6 Seconds.
- Remove the CO2 injector needle from the hole and then wait between 10 to 20 seconds. (Note: When used with a CO2 cartridge the bees and mites are anaesthetised and not killed)
- Keeping the canister upright and carefully shake the bees up and down to dislodge any mites into the yellow cap
- After 10 seconds of shaking remove the bottom cap and count up your mites
- Optional: Pour a small amount of alcohol into the cap to kill the mites before they awake
- Remove the top cap and pour the sleeping bees back into the colony (they will begin to awake after they get fresh air)
CO2 Mite Check Injector Advantages:
- Bee-Friendly Varroa CO2 Injection Count Tester is easy to assemble and use
- Fast process to sample the bees
- Does not kill your bees, keeps the sample of bees alive
- Uses standard CO2 cylinders (Available at most DIY and Bicycle Stores)
- Research conducted in Europe indicated results similar in accuracy to an alcohol wash
Note: That this CO2 varroa tester method does not kill the mites so be sure to dispose of the mites properly and do not put them back in your hive!
Note: This product is not supplied with gas cylinders due to postage/shipping safety. However these CO2 cylinders can be easily purchased from DIY or Cycling stores.
