Description

This screen can be used as either as a propolis grid for harvesting propolis or as a travel screen.

For harvesting propolis place the screen on the topmost frames in the hive, ensuring the maker’s name is facing downwards.  Leave until the bees have deposited propolis in the gaps in the screen and then remove. Place the screen in a large plastic bag in the freezer for at least 24 hours. Remove from the freezer and while still in the bag bend the screen to dislodge the propolis.

For use as a travel screen simply reverse the roof on one of our bee box hives and place the screen underneath the reversed roof. This only works on our hives as the roof has been designed to leave a clear air gap underneath it when it is turned upside down. Secure the hive with a strap, ideally two, ensure the varroa tray is removed and there is room for air to circulate around the hive and take your bees to the blossom! When you arrive just turn the roof back up the correct way, leaving the screen in place for the moment. This will ensure the bees are disturbed as little as possible. remove the screen at the next inspection – unless you want to collect propolis of course!

For long journeys or in high temperatures, ensure the bees remain cool by spraying with water through the screen. If you are concerned the bees may overheat fit an empty super under the screen. This will give the bees plenty of clustering space and ensure air can circulate amongst them easily.

Preparation Guide of Paradise Honey Beehives

Assembling the Polystyrene Beehive with Wood Glue/Adhesive
To assemble a Paradise honey polystyrene beehive, first lay out all the components and ensure they fit together correctly. Apply a high-quality, waterproof wood glue or adhesive to the joints and edges of the polystyrene pieces. Press the parts together firmly, wiping away any excess glue, and allow them to dry completely according to the adhesive’s recommended curing time.

Securing the Hive for Stability
After gluing, ensure the beehive structure is stable and aligned correctly. If needed, use clamps or weights to hold the pieces in place while the glue dries. Double-check that all connections are secure and that the hive is square and level, as any misalignment could affect the hive's functionality and durability.

Painting with UV Water-Based Exterior Paint
Once the hive assembly is complete and the glue has fully dried, apply a UV-protective, water-based exterior paint to the inside and outside of the beehive. This paint will shield the polystyrene from sunlight and weather damage on the outside and stop bees potentially attempting to nibble the interior. Use smooth, even strokes using a short 100mm foam roller to cover the entire surface, applying at least two coats for optimal protection. Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before adding the next, and ensure the hive is fully dry before placing it outdoors.
